“The Great LIFE Photographers” from the Editors of LIFE – Book Review

At 7 x 9 x 2 inches with 608 pages, “The Great LIFE Photographers” covers the work of exactly 100 of LIFE’s photographers.

The works are arranged alphabetically by the photographers last names.

This allows us to view the work of each photographer, in a pleasing portfolio kind of way.

These are photos of our time, for those of us who are a bit older now.

These are the great photos from this great photo magazine. Photos from the 30’s, the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

These are the photos which helped nurture the flame of interest in photos for me in my youth ( I am 52 ).

Fred Astaire, Leaping, Cane, Top Hat, SpatsI viewed them in the day when they were new, or pursued old LIFE photo books of their legacy images, such as they were, back in the day.

Rita HayworthMany were the hours in library stacks viewing images from old well-thumbed issues of Life Magazine, nestled in their neatly labeled magazine racks.

Yes, we used to sit in libraries to see images …

… To see these images.

Libraries were largely where we viewed our images, back in the day.

And here they are again.

Each page is dedicated to one or sometimes a few photos.  Small head shots of the photographers are also included.   Thus we are treated to a view of the wizard behind the curtain.

Words are sparse.  Often just providing a fragment of a line or two of context for the image presented.
