“In the PAINT, The complete body-painting collection from the SI Swimsuit Issue, The Art of Joanne Gair,” by Editors of Sports Illustrated © 2007 – Book Review

In the PAINT, The complete body-painting collection from the SI Swimsuit Issue, The Art of Joanne Gair, by Editors of Sports Illustrated © 2007 Front Cover Heidi Klum Nude in Body Paint on Beach in Sun, BlondeIn the PAINT, The complete body-painting collection from the SI Swimsuit Issue, The Art of Joanne Gair,” by Editors of Sports Illustrated © 2007, features the photos and a bit of back story and shots from Joanne Gair’s body painted swimsuits for Sports Illustrated, which she has been doing since the SI 1999 issue.

There are over 100 pictures of models wearing only painted on suits most notably including Heidi Klum, Tori Praver, Marisa Miller and several others.

Originally from New Zealand, Gair was a makeup stylist turned body painter whose work came to great notice when in 1992 she did the bodypaint for Demi Moore for the cover of “Vanity Fair Magazine.”

Demi Moore Vanity Fair cover 1992 BodyPaint by Joanne Gair suit and TieIf it is the Demi Moore photo series you are loving, you may prefer to read the review for “BodyPaint Masterpieces,” also by Gair.

Personally, I am and have been a lover of body paint for years and have been influenced by these works of Gair’s, and the Vanity Cover, as much as and perhaps a bit more than the next guy.

You may have noticed the body paint influences in my work, on this blog or in my portfolio – click here to view my portfolio, which is hosted on a SmugMug powered photo storage site.

Hardcover, this volume is about 12.5 inches by 10 inches, with roughly 140 pages full of pictures taken on location of bodypainted models, mainly nudes wearing painted on bathing suits and some behind the scenes shots of the models while being painted.

There is just a touch of editorial, my favorite quote being by Model Melissa Keller:

“The most surreal thing was stepping outside and feeling like I had a swimsuit on…”

… course there’s the picture; and no, she didn’t have one …

Yay!

The few bits of writing aside, and with the small amount of back story, this is primarily a picture book

That is, many of the photos within this book I feel are editorial.  They are showing the bodypaint more than creating real art photographs …

Though, the photos by James Porto in particular, of living painted statues, these are some fabulously artistic shots.

While many of the shots in the book are illustrative of the body paint talents of Joanne, and are interesting  to look at, Porto’s work is not just of the talents of Joanne to paint, but of setting, pose, props, mood…

Much of Porto’s works are visually compelling artistic photographs of lovely models, in marvelous body paint and settings and are themselves art in their own right.

For playing her part in the popularization of body paint, which we see so prevalent today, Joanne Gair rightly has a prominent role in the history of this art form as one of its progenitors.

If you love or enjoy body paint,  “In the PAINT,” may well need to be an enjoyable part of your picture book coffee table.
